What is photonics

Photonic technologies, and above all fiber optics, regularly replace the solutions used so far in many sectors: from telecommunications through energy, mining, defense, space, to pharmacy and medicine. That is why photonics is more and more often referred to as the technology of the 21st century and included among the priority areas for the development of the global economy (the European Commission has recognized photonics as one of the six key technologies – Key Enabling Technologies – for Europe’s development strategy). Research and advanced works on the development of photonic systems are carried out by the world’s largest concerns and laboratories and significantly subsidized by the governments of many developed countries.

However, in order to effectively lead to the transfer of unique knowledge to industrial production, an agreement between scientific and research units and enterprises, effective protection of intellectual property and appropriate support from the authorities is needed. On the one hand, the Polish Center for Photonics and Fiber Optics is trying to develop effective models of cooperation, unite Polish scientists and entrepreneurs, and on the other hand, it is seeking the much needed support for the development of native technology. Thanks to appropriate investments, it becomes realistic to create a Polish photonic sector that would be able to effectively compete with the world’s leaders and provide the Polish economy with the much needed acceleration.
